A-Speed Help

Quick answers for getting the most out of your Model A digital touring companion.

What are the portrait dashboard views?

In portrait, swipe left or right to move between five pages: Main Dashboard: Speed and RPM gauges, gear indicator, trip odometer MPH Focus: Large speed gauge, gear, trip odometer RPM Focus: Large RPM gauge, gear, trip odometer Trip Odometer: Large trip odometer focus Driving Stats: Lifetime stats board and achievements summary There are no page dots—explore by swiping. The first time GPS is ready, A-Speed may show a one-time tip about swiping between dashboards.

Do all portrait views have GPS and Settings?

Yes. Every portrait page uses the same header: GPS status (capsule on the badge row) and Settings (gear icon). You can check GPS and open Settings from Main, MPH Focus, RPM Focus, Trip, or Driving Stats without leaving the dashboard.

How do I open the fuel calculator?

On portrait pages except Driving Stats, tap the fuel pump button (bottom-right). It opens the Fuel Economy Calculator sheet.

How do I open Settings?

Tap the gear icon in the dashboard header on any portrait page, or use the same control pattern while browsing the app.

Landscape mode

What views are available in landscape?

Rotate your iPhone to landscape. Swipe horizontally between four pages: Main: Speed readout, gear, RPM readout, trip odometer MPH: Large speed readout RPM: Large RPM readout and gear Trip: Large trip odometer

How do I navigate in landscape?

Swipe left or right, same idea as portrait. A GPS capsule appears in the top-left gutter on all landscape pages.

Where is the Overdrive button in landscape?

When Overdrive is enabled in Settings, the OD button appears on the Main and RPM landscape pages only—not on MPH Focus or Trip. This matches portrait, where MPH Focus does not show the OD button.

Can I toggle Overdrive from the landscape RPM display?

Yes, when Overdrive is enabled: tap the RPM readout panel on Main (RPM row) or RPM Focus. It toggles the same manual Overdrive state as the OD button and portrait RPM gauge tap. When Overdrive is disabled, the RPM panel does not respond to taps.

Speed, GPS, and RPM

Why doesn’t RPM match my engine exactly?

A-Speed estimates RPM from GPS speed and your settings (rear-end ratio, tire diameter, shift points, overdrive)—not from a tachometer signal. Real-world slip, tire growth, converter/clutch behavior, and gauge calibration can all differ. Use Settings and RPM Chart to tune the estimate, but expect small differences.

Why does RPM fluctuate at idle?

At standstill (about 0.5 MPH or less), the app shows your Idle RPM setting with a subtle ±10 RPM wobble so the needle feels more natural. That is intentional.

Why does the gear indicator show `--`?

Below about 0.5 MPH, the app treats the car as stopped and shows -- instead of 1st/2nd/3rd.

Why is my speed different from my mechanical speedometer?

GPS speed and a vintage cable speedometer often disagree slightly. Tire size, calibration, and GPS smoothing all play a role. A-Speed displays GPS-derived speed.

Why isn’t GPS working?

Common causes: Location permission denied — enable in iPhone Settings → A-Speed → Location. Indoors, tunnels, or heavy tree cover. GPS still acquiring fix — wait for a good GPS state in the header capsule. Stale signal — a banner may say Waiting for GPS or GPS unavailable Improve sky view and check that Location Services are on system-wide.

What do the GPS capsule colors mean?

The header GPS indicator reflects authorization and signal quality (for example waiting, good, low accuracy, or unavailable). Use it to confirm the app has a usable fix before trusting speed and trip distance.

Can VPN affect GPS or speed?

The app does not treat VPN specially, but network-based location or VPN tools can sometimes affect how iOS supplies location. If readings look wrong, try without VPN and compare outdoors.

Settings and setup

How do I determine my rear-end ratio?

Use your known rear-end tag (for example 3.54, 3.78, 4.11). A-Speed includes those presets in Settings, or enter a custom value between 3.00 and 4.50. Confirm with RPM Chart at a steady cruise speed.

What tire diameter should I enter?

Measure or look up your tire’s overall diameter (default 29.8 inches). Range in Settings: 28.0–32.0 in. Wrong diameter is a common cause of RPM error.

What do shift points do?

They tell A-Speed when to infer 1st, 2nd, or 3rd gear while driving (with hysteresis so gear does not flicker). Defaults: 12 MPH (1→2) and 25 MPH (2→3). They affect live gear and RPM, not physical shifting.

What does Idle RPM do?

Sets the RPM shown when you are stopped (~0.5 MPH or less). Adjustable 300–900, default 450.

What does RPM redline do?

Sets the threshold for high-RPM highlighting on the live RPM gauge and readouts. Default 2,500. It does not limit engine power—it is a visual warning.

How do I open the Help Center?

Settings → Help (card below Export). It opens theA-Speed Help Centerin Safari for setup guides, FAQs, troubleshooting, and technical resources.

What is at the bottom of Settings?

Below the reset cards you will see: Version and Build (for example Version 1 (Build 14)) — read automatically from the app install. © 2026 A-Speed. All rights reserved.

Why does Version and Build matter?

When you contact support or report a bug, share the Version and Build shown in Settings so we can match your install to the right release. These numbers update with each App Store build; you do not need to look them up elsewhere.

How do I open About A-Speed?

Settings → About A-Speed for app description, privacy philosophy, and contact links (privacy policy, support email, website).

Overdrive

What is Overdrive?

Overdrive is an estimated RPM reduction based on your drivetrain settings—not a physical switch in the car. When active, A-Speed lowers calculated RPM by the Ratio (%) you set (for example 26% less RPM at the same road speed).

What is Manual Overdrive mode?

You choose when Overdrive is on or off using the OD button or by tapping the RPM gauge or RPM display. Automatic engagement at speed does not apply unless you leave the car in Automatic mode.

What is Automatic Overdrive mode?

Overdrive engages at or above your shift speed and disengages slightly below it (hysteresis). You can still override on or off with the OD button or RPM tap while driving.

How do I enable Overdrive?

Open Settings.. Turn on Enable Overdrive.. Choose Manual or Automatic.. Set Ratio (%) and, for Automatic, the shift speed (MPH or KPH per your units).

How do I engage Overdrive manually?

When Overdrive is enabled: Portrait Main or RPM: Tap OD or tap the RPM gauge face Portrait MPH, Trip, Driving Stats: No OD button on these pages—swipe to Main or RPM, or use Settings Landscape Main or RPM: Tap OD or tap the RPM readout panel Landscape MPH or Trip: No OD button—swipe to Main or RPM Tapping again turns manual Overdrive off (or toggles your override in Automatic mode).

What does the brass color mean?

Brass = Overdrive active (selected / engaged indicator state). When Overdrive is active you will see matching brass styling on: The OD button (brass fill). Portrait RPM gauge outer ring (brass accent). Landscape RPM readout panel (brass background when not in redline alert) Inactive Overdrive uses the normal cream/chrome gauge styling.

Can I select Overdrive while stopped?

Yes. You can turn Overdrive on at a stoplight. The OD control and brass indicators update immediately.

Does Overdrive change idle RPM?

No. While stopped or showing idle RPM (~0.5 MPH or less), the gauge stays at your Idle RPM setting (with the usual small wobble). Overdrive affects calculated road-speed RPM only when the vehicle is moving.

Why don’t I see the OD button?

Overdrive must be enabled in Settings. The OD button appears on portrait Main and RPM only, and on landscape Main and RPM only—not on MPH, Trip, or Driving Stats pages.

Does tapping the RPM gauge or RPM display do anything?

Yes, when Overdrive is enabled: it toggles the same manual Overdrive state as the OD button, in portrait (RPM gauge) and landscape (RPM readout panel). When Overdrive is disabled, taps have no effect. VoiceOver may hint that you can double-tap to toggle Overdrive.

Trip odometer

Does the trip odometer reset when I close the app?

No. Trip miles persist on your phone until you tap reset on the trip odometer.

How do I get the trip odometer to update in the background?

Enable Settings → Continue Trip Odometer in Background and grant Always location permission in iOS when prompted.

Fuel economy

What does the Fuel Economy Calculator do?

It helps you record fill-ups and compute MPG or KM/L from fuel volume and distance. Successful calculations are saved to fuel history, update your best MPG stat when applicable, and can contribute to the Fuel Saver achievement. You can also Find Nearby Gas Stations (Apple Maps) from the calculator.

What does Log Mileage Only do?

It saves your current odometer without entering fuel or calculating MPG/KM/L. Use it to establish a baseline odometer for later fill-ups. It appears in history as Mileage Log and prefills Previous Odometer next time. It does not change average MPG or trends on the Driving Stats board.

When should I use Log Mileage Only?

Use it when you want an odometer checkpoint without a full fill-up—for example after installing the app, before a long trip, or when you forgot to log fuel but want the next calculation to have a correct previous odometer.

Why did distance fill in by itself?

If you entered Current and Previous odometer (or Previous was prefilled from history), A-Speed auto-calculates distance driven. Current odometer alone never auto-fills distance.

Why can’t I calculate MPG with only odometer entered?

You must provide fuel volume and distance (typed or derived from two odometer readings). If only current odometer is filled, the app asks you to enter distance or add a previous odometer.

How do I reset fuel history?

Settings → Reset Fuel History (confirmation required). This deletes all fuel entries and mileage-only logs. It does not reset driving stats or achievements.

Do mileage-only logs affect average MPG?

No. Average MPG and trend on the Driving Stats page use fuel calculator entries only.

Driving stats and achievements

What does the Driving Stats page show?

On the portrait Driving Stats swipe page you will see lifetime distance, driving time, completed drives, best fuel economy, acceleration bests, top speed, average fuel trend, and an Achievements summary (“X of 15 earned”). Data is stored on this iPhone since install (or since last reset).

How do I see all earned badges?

On Driving Stats, tap the Achievements card to open Earned Badges (unlocked badges only).

How do I reset driving stats?

Settings → Reset Driving Stats. This clears lifetime distance, driving time, top speed, acceleration bests, fuel economy stats on the stats board, daily mileage history, Perfect Week / Overdrive Pro qualification flags, and all 15 achievements. Fuel history, trip odometer, and Settings are kept.

How do achievements work?

A-Speed has 15 local badges. They unlock automatically when you meet criteria (lifetime miles, single-day miles, speed, sessions, fuel economy, Overdrive use, and more). A popup may appear when you are stopped (~≤ 0.5 MPH) with GPS ready—dismiss it to see the next queued unlock.

Why didn’t my achievement unlock immediately?

Most badges evaluate as you drive, but the celebration popup only shows when you are nearly stopped with good GPS. You may already have the badge in Earned Badges before you see the popup. If the app was force-quit, queued popups may not replay (unlocks are still saved). Overdrive Pro only completes after a single 30-minute continuous Overdrive stint while moving—it does not carry over a relaunch.

Are achievements based on miles or kilometers?

Unlock logic uses miles and MPH internally, even in KPH mode. Titles and descriptions may show metric equivalents (for example “8,000 KM” for 5,000 Miler), but thresholds such as 100 miles in one day for Pro Tourer are still mile-based.

How do daily mileage achievements work?

Pro Tourer (100+ miles in one day) and Long Hauler (250+ miles in one day) use your best single calendar day of GPS distance, using local midnight on your iPhone. They are not lifetime totals. Perfect Week also uses calendar-day totals (see below).

How do I earn Perfect Week?

Drive at least 5 miles on each of seven consecutive calendar days (local device time). A day under 5 miles, or a gap in the calendar streak, breaks the chain and you must build a new run of seven qualifying days.

How do I earn Overdrive Pro?

Keep Overdrive active while moving (≥ ~1 MPH) for 30 continuous minutes in one stint. Manual and Automatic Overdrive both count. The timer resets when Overdrive turns off, you slow to a stop, or GPS tracking is not eligible. Long gaps between GPS updates also reset the timer.

Why didn’t I get Fuel Saver?

Fuel Saver requires best recorded MPG ≥ 20 (displayed as 8.5 KM/L in metric mode) from a saved fuel calculation—not an average.

What counts as a “completed drive”?

A session counts when you move at least about 0.25 miles or drive at least about 2 minutes at ≥ ~1 MPH before a pause ends the session.

Gas stations, export, and privacy

How does nearby gas search work?

From the Fuel Economy Calculator, tap Find Nearby Gas Stations. A-Speed searches near your location with Apple Maps and lets you open directions. Results are not verified by A-Speed.

What gets exported?

A CSV with export metadata, driving stats, fuel history, mileage logs, achievements, and settings values—not GPS routes. Use Settings → Export My A-Speed Data and the system share sheet.

Does A-Speed track my location?

A-Speed uses GPS while the app runs (and optionally in the background for trip odometer) to compute speed and distance. It does not store a route history or send GPS coordinates to analytics.

Does A-Speed collect personal data or accounts?

No. There are no ads, no accounts, and no requirement to sign in. Contact details are only used if you choose to email support or visit linked pages.

What is Share Anonymous Analytics?

Optional usage and stability signals via TelemetryDeck, on by default. You can turn it off anytime in Settings → Share Anonymous Analytics. When enabled, A-Speed may send anonymous signals such as: App launches and which dashboard pages you open Feature use (fuel calculator opened, fuel calculation completed, Log Mileage Only saved, settings opened, help center opened, earned badges viewed, and similar)—without fuel amounts, odometer values, or GPS coordinates Achievement unlock types (badge IDs only) Anonymous error identifiers (not user-entered text) TelemetryDeck uses a hashed per-installation identifier. A-Speed does not send your name, email, or location to TelemetryDeck. Seea-speed.com/privacyfor more.

Why does A-Speed need location access?

Location is required for GPS speed, trip distance, driving statistics, acceleration timing, and optional gas station search. Without it, the speedometer and odometer cannot work.

RPM chart and units

How does the RPM chart work?

Open RPM Chart from the Settings toolbar. It is an offline table showing estimated gear and RPM (and overdrive RPM if enabled) at fixed speeds, using your current Settings. It does not use live GPS—it is a planning reference.

How do I switch to metric (KPH / KM/L)?

Settings → Units (MPH vs KPH). Fuel labels, distances, and displays update. Achievement unlock thresholds stay imperial internally (miles/MPH); titles may show metric equivalents.
